Chapter 28

A low rasping sound came from deep inside the Bangee. It resembled a laugh — somewhat. But in reality, it was more like a phlegmy cough that caused Baya’s skin to prickle.

“I see. You think the price for my knowledge is death.” It made the raspy sound again until its chest shook causing its ribs to protrude even more. “You think that I plan to kill you?” The Bangee narrowed its many eyes. “Now why would you think that? Because I don’t look like you? Because I’m … terrifying?” It shook its head. “Things haven’t changed. You are all still the same — assuming the worst — scared to death of anything that is not like you.”

Baya lowered her head. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have …”

“You, like everyone else, assume that I’m evil? That I’m a killer?” The creature finished her sentence.

Sweat trickled down Baya’s brow as she nodded.

The Bangee lowered itself on its elbows and crawled over to the small fire. “No. The price for my knowledge is …”

It snapped its head around to look at Baya with four wide eyes.

Baya forced herself not to shiver.

“You must tell me your worst fear. … That is all. And don’t bother lying. I can smell a lie almost as well as I can smell fear.”

Baya stared at the floor. An odd mixture of relief and guilt occupied her thoughts. She may make it out alive. Yet, there was also shame because she had assumed that this creature was bad, simply because it looked like nothing she could’ve imagined in her wildest nightmares.

“Well, my pet. Go on. We don’t have all day, now do we?”

“Go … on?”

The creature hissed with exasperation. “Tell me your worst fear.”

“Oh,” Right. This should be easy. Her first thought was of her sister. She had always feared that Tash was better than her — that she would be more powerful and become Unawi.

Baya shook her head. That couldn’t be it. She had left that life behind and no longer feared being second to Tash. “I don’t know.” Baya’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Think, my pet. Think.”

Baya couldn’t focus. Odd emotions consumed her. She had never felt bad for how she’d treated Tash but now, for the first time, it hit her. “I shouldn’t have been so hard on her. I should’ve been a better … sister.”

A clicking sound came from the Bangee. “No, my pet. I’m afraid that is not your worse fear. That maybe what you regret most but that does not interest me. You have one more chance. Choose wisely.”

Baya shook her head. Where had all that come from about her sister? “Okay, my worse fear …” was being eaten by wild beasts. This had been what plagued her night-terrors as a child. But she hadn’t had such dreams since she befriended Mook back in Pathins. “Why is this so hard?”

“If it were easy, then it wouldn’t be worth the knowledge I possess.”

“If you know my worst fears, then why don’t you tell me.”

“What fun would that be?”

Instantly the Bangee’s face was only inches from hers.
